In the town of Colma, just south of San Francisco, the dead outnumber the living one thousand to one. Here, one wouldn’t expect teenagers to burst out in song, or dance around cemeteries and streets. But in COLMA: THE MUSICAL, that’s exactly what happens, accompanied by enough catchy melodies, thoughtfully funny lyrics, and poetic teenage protagonists to compete with the best of Broadway.
Best pals Rodel, Billy, and Maribel find themselves in a state of limbo; fresh out of high school, they are just beginning to explore a new world of part-time mall jobs and crashing college parties. As newfound revelations and romances challenge their relationships with one another and their parents, the trio must assess what to hold onto, and how to best follow their dreams.
Originally conceived as an indie pop album, COLMA: THE MUSICAL is the cinematic realization of writer H.P. Mendoza's and director Richard Wong’s collective vision. Wong’s virtuoso cinematography is on display in the nearly eight-minute, single-take “Crash the Party” sequence, and his multi-screen editing make the film (and the town) fun to look at. Amusing and affectionate, brought to life by an appealing collection of local talent, COLMA: THE MUSICAL is a love song to the city, and to the residents who dream of a better (and more musical) life.
