Syndromes and a Century (Dir. Apichatpong Weerasethakul)

Taro, the Festival Assistant Director, has a great love for films by Apichatpong “Joe” Weerasethakul. In this edition of Taro’s blog, he introduces a new short film by Joe only available online.

One of my favorite filmmakers working today, Apichatpong Weerasethakul (TROPICAL MALADY; SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY) has a new short film, "Prosperity," available only on the web:

His film SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY (SFIAAFF '07) was a critical hit worldwide, but was banned in Thailand for mysterious reasons. (Read Apichatpong's own words on the matter here.)

One hopes that YouTube doesn't turn into the only outlet for independent Thai filmmakers. (Ironically, YouTube was also banned in Thailand for a time last year.) Thankfully, in the US the film has just been made available on DVD by our good friend Marcus Hu and his fine distribution company, Strand Releasing.
